Claiming
At our clinic (HICAPS)
HICAPS is available at our Roxburgh Park clinic. If your appointment is at the clinic, you can claim on the spot by swiping your fund card and pay only the gap on the day.
Home visits
For home visits, you pay in full and claim through your fund's app or website using our receipt, which includes the item numbers and provider details your fund needs. Most funds process an app claim within a day or two.
Alternatives
We would rather tell you this upfront than have you use up a limit unnecessarily.
If you are an older Australian
Receiving aged care support, Support at Home funds clinical care in full, covering nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, dietetics and speech pathology, regardless of income or assets. That is better than any extras rebate.
If you are an NDIS participant
Therapy related to your disability comes from your plan, not your extras.
If you have a chronic condition
A GP Chronic Condition Management Plan provides five rebated services per calendar year, which you can use alongside extras across the year.
If your injury happened at work or in a transport accident
WorkCover or TAC covers treatment, usually with no cost to you.
Using extras when one of these applies means paying a gap for something that could have been fully funded.
Extras cover varies enormously between funds and policies, and the differences are worth two minutes on the phone to your fund.
Is the service on your policy? Physiotherapy and podiatry are widely covered. Occupational therapy, dietetics and speech pathology are on fewer policies, and often only at higher tiers.
What is your annual limit? Most policies cap each service type annually, and many people discover the cap only when a claim is declined.
Have you served the waiting period? New policies and upgrades usually carry a waiting period before extras can be claimed.
How much is the rebate? Funds pay a set amount per service, not a percentage of the fee. The rest is your gap.
Ask your fund: "What is my annual limit and per-visit rebate for [service], and have I served the waiting period?" That single question avoids nearly every unpleasant surprise in this area.
Extras commonly also covers custom orthotics and some equipment, usually under a separate annual limit. Check that limit before an orthotic is ordered rather than after.
