Occupational Therapy Starts With What You Want To Do

Most NDIS conversations start with a condition. Occupational therapy starts somewhere more useful, with the thing the participant is trying to do and cannot, or can only do with more help than they want.

Getting showered without someone in the room. Cooking a meal. Managing money. Catching the bus to TAFE. Being alone in the house safely. Keeping a job. Our Sunshine Coast Occupational Therapists work backwards from those goals to identify what is actually in the way, then address it, through skill building, changed methods, equipment, environmental modification, or the right kind and amount of support.

Because we assess in the home and community rather than a clinic room, what we recommend is grounded in how the participant genuinely manages, not how they perform in an unfamiliar setting on a good day.

NDIS Assessments

Functional Capacity Assessments on the Sunshine Coast

A Functional Capacity Assessment answers a question a diagnosis cannot: what does this person's disability actually stop them doing, and what would change that?

Our Occupational Therapists complete comprehensive FCAs that assess a participant's strengths, challenges, goals and support needs, and provide clear, evidence-based recommendations that help participants get the most out of their NDIS funding. We look at personal care, mobility, household tasks, communication, community access, social participation, decision-making, memory and safety, as they play out in the participant's real environments.

What an FCA Involves

What a Functional Capacity Assessment involves

Assessment in the participant's own home and community
Interview with the participant and, where appropriate, family, carers, support workers and support coordinators
Structured observation of daily tasks, self-care, domestic activities, mobility and transfers
Standardised and clinically validated assessment tools relevant to the condition
Review of existing reports, specialist correspondence and current supports
Assessment of cognition, communication, safety awareness and decision-making capacity
Analysis of the home environment, access, equipment and risk
Identification of the participant's goals and what is getting in the way of them
A detailed written report linking functional impact to recommended supports
NDIS Funding Recommendations

Evidence-Based Recommendations for NDIS Funding

A well-prepared FCA provides recommendations aligned to a participant's goals and support requirements, which may include:

Support worker assistance
Occupational therapy and allied health services
Assistive technology
Home modifications
Capacity building supports
Community participation supports
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
Ongoing therapy and rehabilitation services

By clearly linking functional limitations to recommended supports, an FCA helps the NDIS understand the reasonable and necessary funding required to maximise independence, improve quality of life and support meaningful participation.

Capacity Building

Building Everyday Independence

Capacity building is the part of occupational therapy that produces lasting change. Rather than adding support hours indefinitely, we work on the skills, strategies and set-ups that let a participant do more themselves.

That might mean breaking a shower routine into a sequence that works, setting up a kitchen so cooking becomes safe, building a visual routine that reduces the prompting a person needs, teaching a new method for a task the old method no longer suits, or practising a bus route until it is genuinely independent.

Equipment & Environment

Assistive Technology and Home Modifications

Equipment and environment do work that no amount of therapy can. Our Occupational Therapists complete assistive technology assessment, trial and prescription, from daily living aids through to wheelchairs, seating, pressure care, transfer equipment and complex technology, and prepare the reports and quotes required to support the funding request.

For home modifications, we assess the participant against the property and specify what is required, whether that is minor work such as grab rails, step ramps and handrails, or complex work such as level-access showers, bathroom reconfiguration, widened doorways or access ramps. We follow through by reviewing the outcome once equipment arrives or work is finished, to confirm it does what it was meant to.
