Transport Accident (TAC) Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy for people recovering from a transport accident, at our Roxburgh Park clinic or in your home across Melbourne.

The Transport Accident Commission scheme covers Victorians injured in transport accidents regardless of who was at fault. If you have been injured on the road, you are very likely entitled to funded treatment, and a surprising number of people never claim.

The Part People Get Wrong About TAC

Two misunderstandings stop people accessing treatment they are entitled to.

"It was my fault, so I can't claim." TAC is a no-fault scheme. Entitlement does not depend on who caused the accident.

"It was only a minor accident." TAC covers injuries from any transport accident involving a registered vehicle, car, motorcycle, bicycle collision with a vehicle, public transport, or as a pedestrian. Low-speed collisions produce genuine injuries, particularly to the neck, and a claim is worth lodging.

The other common problem is delay. People wait to see whether the pain settles, then find themselves three months in with a problem that has become harder to treat and a claim that is more complicated to substantiate. Lodge the claim early, even if you are not sure you need treatment.

How the Claim Works

You lodge a claim with TAC, this can be done by phone or online, and your GP or hospital may have started it already. You receive a claim number.

Your GP provides the initial medical certificate and referral. TAC generally funds a defined initial course of physiotherapy without prior approval, with further treatment continuing on clinical justification and reporting.

We handle the TAC administration. Treatment plans, progress reports, requests for further sessions and liaison with your case manager. You should be concentrating on recovering, not on paperwork.

Bring your claim number to the first appointment, or tell us at booking if a claim has not been lodged yet and we will explain how to do it.

What We Treat

Whiplash and neck injury, the most common transport accident injury by a wide margin, and one where early, active management produces better outcomes than rest and a collar.

Back injury, from acute strain through to persistent pain.

Shoulder, knee and limb injuries, including post-surgical rehabilitation after accident-related surgery.

Fractures, rehabilitation after immobilisation, and recovery of strength and range.

Head injury, physiotherapy input for balance, dizziness and activity tolerance, alongside the treating team.

Multi-trauma and major injury, longer-term rehabilitation, coordinated with your case manager and other providers.

Return to work and driving, graded return-to-work programs, and physical readiness for driving assessed with the appropriate specialists.

When to Seek Help

See a doctor or attend an emergency department immediately after any accident if there is:

  • Loss of consciousness, confusion, repeated vomiting or worsening headache
  • Neck pain with numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin
  • Severe pain, obvious deformity, or inability to bear weight
  • Chest or abdominal pain, or breathlessness
  • Any injury in someone taking blood-thinning medication

Start physiotherapy early for neck, back and limb injuries. Prolonged rest after whiplash is associated with worse outcomes than gradual return to normal movement, which is the opposite of what most people are told by the people around them.

Contact your GP or return to us promptly if symptoms are worsening rather than settling, if new neurological symptoms appear, or if pain is spreading.

What to Expect

Assessment takes around an hour, at our Roxburgh Park clinic or in your home.

Your physiotherapist will ask about the accident itself, direction of impact, speed, seatbelt, headrest position, whether you saw it coming, because the mechanism explains a great deal about the injury pattern. They will assess movement, strength, nerve involvement and pain behaviour.

You will get an explanation of the injury, an active treatment plan, and a realistic recovery timeframe. Most transport accident injuries recover well; some become persistent, and the factors that predict that are known and partly modifiable, which is why early active management matters.

We report to your GP and TAC case manager throughout.

Recovery, Honestly

Most people recover from whiplash and similar injuries within weeks to a few months. A minority develop persistent symptoms, and the strongest predictors are early high pain levels, high distress, and a belief that movement will cause damage.

That last one is the one we can do most about. Graded return to normal activity, with a clear explanation of why hurt does not equal harm in this context, is a core part of treatment rather than reassurance tacked on the end.

We will not tell you the pain will be gone by a specific date. We will tell you what the usual trajectory looks like and what to do if yours is not following it.

Simple Process

How to Get Started

1

Lodge your TAC claim

Contact TAC to lodge a claim if you have not already. Your GP or the hospital may have started this. You will receive a claim number.

2

We call you for an initial discussion

Our team asks when the accident happened, what injuries were sustained, what treatment you have had, whether a claim is lodged and whether you have a claim number and GP referral. We explain what TAC funds and handle the approval process from there.

3

Assessment

Full physiotherapy assessment at the clinic or at home.

4

Treatment plan

An active treatment plan with goals and a realistic timeframe, submitted to TAC where approval is required.

5

Treatment and progression

Regular sessions, progressed as you recover, with a home program throughout.

6

Reporting and return to activity

Progress reports to TAC and your GP, and a graded plan for returning to work, driving and normal activity.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim if the accident was my fault?
Yes. TAC is a no-fault scheme, so entitlement does not depend on who caused the accident.
Do I need a GP referral?
You need a GP to provide the initial certificate and referral for TAC-funded treatment. Our team will explain exactly what is needed.
How many sessions will TAC cover?
TAC generally funds an initial course without prior approval, with further treatment continuing on clinical justification. We manage the requests and reporting.
Will it cost me anything?
Where treatment is approved under an accepted claim, TAC pays the provider directly. We will tell you before your first appointment if any gap applies.
What if my claim has not been accepted yet?
You can still be treated. We will explain the options for the interim period rather than have you go untreated while a claim is processed.
It has been months since my accident. Is it too late?
No. Later referrals are common and treatable, though earlier is better. Claim time limits do apply, so lodge the claim as soon as you can.
I was a cyclist / pedestrian, not in a car. Am I covered?
Generally yes, where a registered vehicle was involved. Lodge a claim and TAC will assess it.
